Tata Motors is currently developing a new petrol engine with the aim of providing enhanced performance to its premium cars. The company announced that it is developing a new petrol engine for its premium sports utility vehicles (SUVs), the Harrier and Safari. According to the company, the new petrol engine will be used in the Harrier and Safari models.

Currently, these models are equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel engine. Shailesh Chandra, the director of passenger vehicles at Tata Motors, revealed that the engine is being developed and will be made available on two models in the future. Previously, the company had focused entirely on diesel engines, as the Harrier and Safari operate in a segment that sells around 200,000 units annually. However, the company is now shifting its focus to petrol engines.

“We are working on a 1.5-liter GDI engine because we know that there will be an increase in demand for petrol vehicles in the future,” Chandra stated.

Earlier this year, Tata Motors launched updated versions of the Safari and Harrier SUVs. Apart from design updates, there were no major changes in either the Safari or Harrier. Both SUVs are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. There are two transmission options: a 6-speed manual and an automatic. Larger families may still prefer the Safari over the Harrier due to its sportier look.

Tata Motors’ focus on developing a new petrol engine for its premium SUVs reflects the evolving demand in the market. As customers increasingly look for petrol-powered vehicles, the company aims to provide a wider range of options to cater to their needs. By introducing a new petrol engine, Tata Motors is ensuring that its premium SUVs remain competitive in the market.
