World Cup 2023: A cloud of uncertainty hovered over New Zealand’s camp after their premier fast bowler, Tim Southee, fractured his right thumb during the ODI series against England just before the 2023 World Cup. Following the injury, Southee underwent surgery, sparking concerns over his participation in the marquee event. Nonetheless, showcasing his unwavering commitment, he joined the Kiwi contingent and arrived in India this past Sunday.

Addressing the media and fans, Southee shared an update on his recuperation. He mentioned, “Although the thumb feels a tad delicate, I’ve begun bowling sessions. Given the recovery trajectory, I’m optimistic about being match-ready at any juncture during the World Cup.”

World Cup 2023: The unfortunate incident transpired during the fourth ODI against England. Engaged in a fielding effort, Southee strained to catch a shot from Joe Root in England’s 14th over. This mishap not only impeded him from completing his bowling spell but also kept him off the batting crease. Post-game diagnostics confirmed a fractured thumb, necessitating surgical intervention.

As the New Zealand squad touched down in Ahmedabad in anticipation of their inaugural World Cup match against England on October 5th, Southee provided a further health update: “There’s lingering tenderness, coupled with a bit of bruising and a faint numb sensation around the surgically implanted plate. My focus now is acclimatizing to the discomfort while resuming my regular bowling regimen. It’s been a couple of weeks since I last bowled, so regaining my rhythm, alongside managing the thumb, is paramount. It indeed was a race against the clock, but I made it to India.”
