Ravindra Pandey’s fields are not just a testament to traditional farming but a shining example of innovation. Investing a modest sum of Rs. 62,000, he began his venture with dragon fruit farming, a cactus plant unfamiliar to many in his region. Today, that investment yields an impressive annual return of Rs. 4 lakh, all thanks to the cultivation of this exotic fruit.
Turning Down The Lure of Foreign Shores:
With a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics, Ravindra was not short of job opportunities. Companies from abroad were willing to hire him, offering lucrative positions. However, in a bold move, he chose the soil over corporate boardrooms, understanding the potential that lay in agriculture, particularly in niche areas like dragon fruit cultivation.
A Guiding Light and the Road Ahead:
While Ravindra was charting his career path, he crossed paths with the then DM Akhand Pratap Singh, who introduced him to the potential of dragon fruit farming. Motivated by this, Ravindra embarked on a pilot project, planting a dragon fruit nursery in a 10 Biswa field. This initial step soon expanded to not just cultivating the fruit but also selling its saplings, significantly augmenting his income.
Overcoming Initial Challenges:
Every success story has its share of challenges and Ravindra’s was no different. Assisted by his father, Suresh Chandra Pandey, Ravindra initially planted 400 dragon fruit saplings. The initial two years were a test of patience as the use of chemical fertilizers did not yield the anticipated results. Determined to succeed, he reached out to international dragon fruit farmers through the internet. Their golden advice was to abandon chemical fertilizers and embrace organic ones.
