Nestled in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, the village of Jalna might appear like any other Indian village at first glance. However, it has a story to tell. A story of relentless ambition, dogged determination, and the unyielding human spirit. This is the story of Ansar Shaikh, who, against all odds, became the country’s youngest IAS officer at the mere age of 21.

Humble Beginnings:

Ansar’s life story is rooted in humble beginnings. His father, Anas Shaikh, eked out a living by driving an autorickshaw on the uneven roads of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region. Meanwhile, his brother picked up the tools and greased his hands, working as a mechanic.

Academic Excellence:

Ansar’s academic prowess became evident early on. After finishing his schooling, he pursued a degree in Political Science from the renowned Fergusson College, Pune, and impressively clinched 73% marks. But his journey to this point was not smooth. Given the financial strain on his family, there were pressures and persuasions to leave school. But one teacher saw the spark in young Ansar and convinced his father of his academic potential. Heeding to the teacher’s words, Ansar’s education continued. And he didn’t disappoint – securing a remarkable 91% in his 12th-grade examinations.

The Road to UPSC:

UPSC is a challenge for even the brightest minds in India. But for Ansar, it was more than just an exam. It was his ticket to break the shackles of poverty and make a significant impact. With fire in his belly, Ansar worked tirelessly, clocking in 12-hour study sessions daily for three continuous years. Realizing the mountainous task ahead, he enrolled in a coaching academy. Acknowledging his financial constraints, the academy even waived a portion of his fees.

In 2015, the hard work bore fruit. Ansar Shaikh not only cleared the UPSC exam but secured the 361st rank, all in his very first attempt. What made this achievement even more commendable was his age – a mere 21 years, making him the youngest IAS officer in India’s history.
